Adventures into Portland, Maine during March 2022

Post by echo »

Day 1.
We flew into the Portland Airport, landing in the afternoon of March 15, 2022. The airport was small and checked baggage waited for us by the time we made it to baggage claim. Interestingly, the car rental counter was in a separate building. It was a little chilly walking from baggage claim building to the car rental building. The Emerald Aisle program did not appear to be in effect here so we picked up our keys from the clerk at the counter. We got loaded into the van and passed the Maine Mall as we drove to our hotel on the waterfront. We used our digital key to check in to the 5th story room with a view. Looking south from the hotel room windows, we saw ferries, Casco Bay, lighthouses, and seagulls. After unpacking, we walked over to Commercial St to find a seafood dinner. We had dinner at Boones. They offer mac and cheese for kids. We had delicious seafood plates.

Day 2.
We picked up some breakfast from the hotel lobby and slowly got ready for the day. The first stop was over to the Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth. The meandering road trip was brief and took us past beautiful New England style houses tucked away deep into tall, thick evergreen trees. Arriving at the Portland Head Light lighthouse area, we parked at the beach and walked around the lighthouse area. The shop area was closed for the season, but we hiked the trails and spent some time rock-clumbing the sharp, jagged, massive rocks that make up the beach.

The temperature was chilly, but bearable.. probably in the mid-40s F or so. On our way back into Portland, we stopped in at a Dunkin Donuts to pick up coffee, donuts, and hot chocolates. Mid-afternoon, we stopped at Gilbert's Chowder House for a seafood lunch. I had a super seafood chowder served in a bread bowl.

Day 3.
We started driving North to Augusta, stopping in Yarmouth to see the world's largest globe "Eartha".

Leaving the candy store, we stopped by and walked a sandy beach. We discovered a few large clam shells.

Day 4.
Driving around Cape Elizabeth area, we started on the way to see a few lighthouses, but took a detour the moment we saw a sign "Crescent Beach -->". We pulled into a parking lot, then walked down to the whitish sandy beach that had a large assortment of interesting, colorful rocks. Several rocks glittered in the sun. The sun was out and warming up the beach, but the cool breeze from the water made sure that we kept our light sweaters on. We walked the beach examining the assortment of rocks, then shells until the whitish-gray sand turned into massive, sharp, jagged rocks. Then, we crawled precariously along the slippery rocks to get closer to the edge where the rocks dropped into the Atlantic. The ocean waves crashed thunderously against the jagged, rocky beach.
