Why Apple is building two different smartglasses platforms

A revolution is coming. And even the general public understands it has something to do with headsets, goggles or glasses.
But what is the reality of the coming revolution, exactly? Virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), extended reality (ER), mixed reality (XR)?
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg changed the name of his company from Facebook to Meta, then miraculously convinced the media to refer to all of these realities as the metaverse. That marketing miracle also led many to view Zuckerberg as the leader or, at least, the thought leader of this new trend.
Thats why people were shocked (and Zuckerberg mocked) when Zuck shared a selfie from Horizon Worlds, Metas virtual reality game, as part of its European debut; instead of looking like the future, it looked like the 1990s. He later explained on Instagram that the graphics were pretty basic taken very quickly to celebrate a launch.
To read this article in full, please click here
How Generation Z workers are different from everyone else

Members of Generation Z, or people born between 1997 and 2012, will comprise 27% of the workforce by 2025. That means they will soon be working in your company if they aren't already.
What makes this generation different from the ones that came before it? Statistically, a few facts are worth noting.
Gen Z is on track to be the most diverse and best-educated generation yet. More than 20% of its members identify as LGBT. Yet, they have little or no memory of 9/11. ??Nearly every one of them owns a smartphone, at least in the developed world.
To read this article in full, please click here

A Windows launch isnt the end a process its really just the beginning. As with Windows 10, Microsoft continually works on improving Windows 11 by fixing bugs, releasing security patches, and occasionally adding new features.
In this story we summarize what you need to know about each update released to the public for Windows 11. For each build, weve included the date of its release and a link to Microsofts announcement about it. The most recent updates appear first.
The easiest way to install updates is via Windows Update. Windows 11 Insider Previews: Whats in the latest build?

Fri, 26 Aug 2022 13:15:00 -0700
Windows 11 has been released, but behind the scenes, Microsoft is constantly working to improve the newest version of Windows. The company frequently rolls out public preview builds to members of its Windows Insider Program, allowing them to test out and even help shape upcoming features.
The Windows Insider program is divided into three channels:

The Dev Channel is where new features are introduced for initial testing, regardless of which Windows release theyll eventually end up in. This channel is best for technical users and developers and builds in it may be unstable and buggy.

In the Beta Channel, youll get more polished features that will be deployed in the next major Windows release. This channel is best for early adopters, and Microsoft says your feedback in this channel will have the most impact.

The Release Preview Channel typically doesnt see action until shortly before a new feature update is rolled out. Its meant for final testing of an upcoming release and is best for those who want the most stable builds.

The Beta and Release Preview Channels also receive bug-fix builds for the currently shipping version of Windows 11.
To read this article in full, please click here
What is Managed Device Attestation on Apple platforms?

Announced at WWDC 2022, Managed Device Attestation protection shows that Apple is adjusting device security protections to adapt to an increasingly distributed age.
Secure the endpoints, not the end times

This adjustment reflects a reality shift. Work doesnt happen on specific servers or behind defined firewalls today. VPN access can differ across teams. And yet, in a workplace defined by multiple remote devices (endpoints), the security threat is greater than ever.
Managed Device Attestation works to create a second boundary of trust around which device management solutions can work to protect against attack.
To read this article in full, please click here

As the world returns to the office, many people are finding themselves working in a new hybrid environment, where some of the workweek is spent at home and some is spent in the office.
Working from essentially two different offices can make productivity in both places challenging. A collaborative study from researchers at the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM), Stanford, the University of Chicago, and MIT found that six out of 10 workers reported being more productive at home than they expected to be, in part because they were able to cut out commute time and unwanted conversations with chatty co-workers. Your phone's virtual Rolodex is about as exhilarating as a trip to the endodontist. The Google Contacts app has some genuinely useful advanced options that can make your life easier and make your phone more intelligent. Last week, I looked at some technologies that can solve the increasingly pernicious problem of robocalls.
They work great for individuals, but these intrusions on our time and privacy present a different problem for people who work in offices.
Of late, scammers have begun transitioning to corporate phone numbers because businesses live and die by their calls, says Matthew Mizenko, a senior vice president at RoboKiller Enterprise. They have to answer, thus exposing them to greater risk.
Automatically blocking or screening unknown numbers is risky since businesses cant predict who will call or why. Productivity and the risks of quiet quitting

I was just wrapping my head around whats been happening with the Great Resignation when I became aware of a new trend: quiet quitting. While the term is new, the concept isnt; its similar to the Blue Flu in law enforcement. Basically, quiet quitting involves a critical number of employees who do just the minimum to keep their jobs. As a result, productivity takes a hit.
To read this article in full, please click here

A growing number of companies have instituted policies allowing any employee to work fully remote, including Twitter, Meta (Facebook), Airbnb, 3M, Atlassian, Lyft, SAP, Slack, Spotify, and??VMware. Many are taking a cue??from employees who want to work in a fully virtual world, choosing to shutter offices and manage remotely; other organizations have permanently closed offices that were only used infrequently by a small number of employees.
To read this article in full, please click here
Android security: Analysis, advice, and next-level knowledge

Thu, 18 Aug 2022 03:00:00 -0700
It's tough to talk about Android security without venturing into sensational terrain.
A large part of that is due to the simple fact that the forces driving most Android security coverage are companies that make their money by selling Android security software and thus companies with strong interests in pushing the narrative that every Android phone is on the perpetual brink of grave, unfathomable danger. Plus, let's face it: A headline about 70 gazillion Android phones being vulnerable to the MegaMonsterSkullCrusher Virus is far more enticing than one explaining the nuanced realities of Android security.
In actuality, though, Android security is a complex beast one with multiple layers in place to protect you and one that almost never warrants an alarmist attitude. I've been covering Android security closely since the platform's earliest days, and I've busted more myths and called out more shameless publicity stunts than I can even count at this point.
To read this article in full, please click here

Microsoft never sleeps. In addition to its steady releases of major and minor updates to the current version of Windows 10, the company frequently rolls out public preview builds to members of its Windows Insider Program, allowing them to test out and even help shape upcoming features.
Windows Insiders can choose to receive preview builds in one of three channels. The Dev Channel is where new features are introduced for initial testing, regardless of which Windows release theyll eventually end up in. The Beta Channel lets you test more polished features that will be deployed in the next major Windows release. Insiders in the Dev and Beta Channels are now testing Windows 11 builds.
To read this article in full, please click here
