Technology companies this year have been hit with global economic turbulence that is slowing growth and leading to widespread layoffs, even as some segments of enterprise spending on IT seem to be holding steady.
According to TrueUp???s tech layoff tracker, there have been 1138 rounds of layoffs at tech companies globally so far this year, affecting 182,605 people.
When global economic headwinds started picking up earlier in the year, many technology companies reacted to fears of an incoming recession by putting the brakes on hiring. The bad news is???amid rising interest rates, the ongoing war in Ukraine, high fuel costs, supply chain issues, and a decline in personal PC sales???most of those freezes have since been accompanied by job cuts, as companies look for ways to reduce operating costs.
To read this article in full, please click here
The ultimate guide to Android contacts management

You'd think keeping tabs on your contacts would be about the simplest and most straightforward task imaginable in our modern connected world ??? wouldn't you?
I sure would. But as I've learned over the years, that perfectly understandable instinct couldn't be more inaccurate.
Effectively wrangling your contacts on Android and keeping 'em manageable, organized, and optimized for efficiency really is a fine art. And in a way, it's no wonder: Most of us have reached a point where our phones' contacts are a sprawling goulash of earthlings from all different eras of our lives ??? clients, colleagues, college buddies, and, of course, your cousin Carl from Poughkeepsie.
To read this article in full, please click here

It???s time to audit your code, as it appears that some no/low code features used in iOS or Android apps may not be as secure as you thought.
What???s at issue is that code developed by a company called Pushwoosh has been deployed within thousands of apps from thousands of entities. Q&A: RPI president says CHIPs Act will spur quantum computing, next-gen tech

Even before it was signed into law in August, the CHIPS and Science Act had attracted the biggest manufacturers of semiconductors to commit to buidling fabrication plants in various parts of the United States, essentially "reshoring" an industry the nation once dominated.
The measure is a $52.7 billion package of subsidies and grants to the US semiconductor manufacturing industry aimed at reducing US dependency on Asia-based silicon makers. The lack of US-based chipmakers recently led to a supply chain crisis for computer device makers, the automotive industry, and other industries dependent on the microprocessors to run their highly automated products.
To read this article in full, please click here

Jamf CEO Dean Hager cited IDC data that showed Mac device shipments declined in Q2, remaining pretty much flat year on year, but observed that for the four preceding quarters IDC pegged Mac shipments as increasing 30% year over year.
Macs accounted for 13% of all PCs sold, ???the highest Mac share on record,??? he said.
Dell has the best acquisition process on the planet. What makes it so good is this: Dell does a lot of due diligence and planning at the front end and accepts the related risk of having to sideline executives for up to a year if the acquisition doesn???t go through. This measures the risk of losing the productivity of a handful of people against losing the productivity of the entire acquired unit. So far, every Dell acquisition I???ve tracked has not only been successful, but the acquired company outperformed its previous status. Cloud, services to fuel 3.7% jump in EMEA IT spending in 2023: Gartner
Link: https://www.computerworld.com/article/3 ... tk.rss_all
Wed, 09 Nov 2022 09:10:00 -0800
New research from Gartner shows that IT spending in EMEA is set to see a 3.7%, year- over-year increase in 2023, rising to $1.3 trillion.
While companies are often hesitant to sign new contracts or commit to long-term spending initiatives during turbulent times, enterprise IT budgets are not central to this hesitancy, and as a result, businesses in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) are set to increase their IT budgets in 2023, said Gartner analyst and vice president John Lovelock.
In research released Wednesday at the company's IT Symposium 2022 in Barcelona, Gartner found that increased spending on cloud software is largely fuelling the spending growth, with EMEA CIOs using cloud-first technologies to drive new initiatives, such as packaged business capabilities (PBCs) and data grids, while maintaining current on-premises environments.
To read this article in full, please click here

Often, users will continue to run an out-of-date, unsupported platform long after its end of life ??? as long as there is a supported browser that still works. Windows 7, for instance, has had a longer-than-normal life because of the Extended Software support Microsoft has provided; that???s given it an extra three years. Sure, each year meant an increase in price. Apple has warned that COVID-related disruptions mean it will not be able to meet demand for iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, forcing customers to wait longer to get hold of the new smartphones and undercutting sales in the current quarter.
iPhone production hit by new lockdowns

The company confirmed this news in a??short statement on Sunday. It???s unusual for a company to make statements on Sundays, suggesting Apple expects these events to impact its trading results, something it must disclose.
To read this article in full, please click here

Tech firms in October hired between 15,300 and 20,700 workers (depending on who's doing the counting), marking roughly two straight years of hiring growth in the industry, according to two new employment reports.
So far this year, tech industry employment has increased by 193,900 jobs, 28% higher than the same period in 2021, according to a jobs report from CompTIA, a nonprofit association for the IT industry and workforce.??
In contrast, technology job postings by tech and non-tech companies had been on a five-month downward slide until last month. Tech workers employed throughout the economy, regardless of industry, declined by 116,000 last month, according to CompTIA. CompTIA's report is based on the latest US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data.
To read this article in full, please click here

After worker productivity climbed to near-record levels during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic and the shift to hybrid and remote work, it fell hard in the first half of 2022 ??? leaving experts to scratch their heads as to why.
On Thursday, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics released third-quarter data showing business productivity had increased marginally ??? up just 0.3% from the previous quarter -- and worker output had risen a paltry ??2.8%. But??compared to the same quarter a year ago, productivity is still down 1.4%, a drop that represents the first instance of three consecutive declines in productivity since 1982.
To read this article in full, please click here
